The Gender Conversation – exploring the impact of gender in life insurance

Traditionally, the gender conversation has focused on binary genders, with inequalities in pay and retirement savings being the hot topics in superannuation. In Australia, and across the globe, gender diversity has become one of the most divisive topics of our times.

When it comes to life insurance in superannuation do we need to consider and potentially adapt our policies, procedures, products and support to be more accessible and inclusive? Across our industry it is commonplace for life insurance to be priced and offered on the basis of core characteristics, including: age, whether the person is a smoker, their occupation and their gender. This is consistent with industry-wide practice.

With a cross functional panel of industry experts from TAL, we openly discussed the key considerations and implications for our industry in better supporting members, considering insights across:

• Gender identities, shifting community expectations and our role in relation to gender inclusion

• Life insurance product design and pricing, the role of gender, and global market insights

• Health considerations for non–binary and transgender people, specifically considering the underwriting, claims and service experience
